Karlheinz Brandenburg is a German scientist born on June 20, 1954, in Erlangen, Germany. It is an audio engineer who has contributed to audio compression MPEG Audio Layer 3 format, or better known as MP3.
Karlheinz
Brandenburg studied at the Friedrich-Alexander University of
Erlangen-Nürnberg, earned diploma (Dipl.Ing) electrical engineering in
1980 and Mathematics in 1982 and graduated PhD in 1989. In 2000,
Karlheinz Brandenburg moved to Ilmenau and in May 2000 he was appointed head of the Audio / multimedia department at the Fraunhofer Institute in Erlangen. Since 2000 he has been a professor at the Institute of Media Technology at the Technical University of Ilmenau.
Research on audio compression method has been started Brandenburg
since 1977, but this new MP3 project officially started in 1987. MP3 is
an audio format developed by MPEG or stands for Motion Pictures Expert
Group.
MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer III. With MP3 technology one can compress audio files into smaller ones. Suppose that in 1 CD the number of songs WAV format maximum 10-20 songs but 1 CD format MP3 can contain up to dozens of songs. It is quite difficult for us to distinguish the audio quality that we
hear from CD or MP3 because the scientists are trying hard to find audio
compression technology without reducing the quality of the original
sound.
Brandenburg
reveals that in 1991 the project nearly died because there was no
progress and several times made a mistake but the scientists who led
unyielding until finally found the location of his mistakes and managed
to perfect the discovery of this MP3. The discovery of this MP3 has been granted licenses and patents from America for "digital encoding process". The inventors listed in the MP3 Patent are Bernhard Grill, Karl-Heinz
Brandenburg, Thomas Sporer, Bernd Kurten and Ernst Eberlein.
A short history of MP3
A
group of scientists from Fraunhofer started research under the code
name of the EUREKA EU147 project for Digital Audio Broadcasting in 1987.
In January 1988, the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) was formed as
a subcommittee of The International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) . In April 1989, Fraunhofer received a German patent for MP3.
In 1992 Dieter Seitzer of Fraunhofer integrates audio coding algorithms for MPEG-1 (low-bandwidth video compression standard). In 1993 the MPEG-1 standard was published. Then in 1994 MPEG-2, developed to perfect MPEG-1 in the video
compression process, the discovery of MPEG 2 was published 1 year later.
In 1996, precisely November 26, the American patent for MP3 was
published and beginning in September 1998, Fraunhofer upheld their
patents so that all development results from the invention of MP3
technology have to pay Fraunhofer license fees.
In February 1999 for the first time a record company called SubPop distributed its music tracks through the MP3 format. New in 1999 MP3 player began to bloom for sale.
The first song Brandenburg used in his experimental and testing MP3
technology was "Tom's Dinner", sung by a singer named Suzane Vega.
